Northland RT Day#2 - Cape Reinga and Giant Sand Dunes

About 10 minutes into the drive this morning and we arrive at a ferry crossing, it’s was only $11 so we caught it over and our next quick stop was at a little waterfall and then on to Aroha Island Kiwi bird sanctuary! We didn’t see any cause they only come out at night, but we did learn some interesting facts about them like they lay the biggest egg compared to there body size, 3x the weight of the bird! Driving along the coast we stopped at a beautiful beach in the bay of islands for a pit stop. On our way up to Cape Reinga we came upon a flipped car in the middle of the road and an elderly couple had hit the guardrail and overturned their car. They were already out of the vehicle and were in pretty good shape just a little shaken up! There were a few locals helping out already and police, ambulance and tow truck were on the way so we kept on up the road. We stopped early afternoon at some massive sand dunes and decided to come back in the late afternoon when it was a little cooler to climb them. Just up the road a few minutes and we were at Cape Reinga, the most northerly point of NZ. It was very beautiful and we would have liked to go down to the point but no tracks went down there, just to the other beaches. That was fine though, we had a giant sand dune to climb! It was maybe the hardest hill I’ve ever climbed. So much wasted energy goes into the sand and the legs were a burnin! Got some great pics though! It was nuts how the brown sand dunes just instantly turned into green bush. We found a great little lake to free camp at so that was great.
