Northland RT Day#4 - Maungaraho Rock, Piron Falls and Mosquito Bay

We finally found a spot level enough to drive our car on the beach by the caravan park so we did a got a few pics. There were really no other places we knew of that we wanted to see so we just kept on south hoping we would just come upon cool things, and that we did! First was Maungaraho Rock, this massive rock exploding out of rolling green fields. We went to see if you could climb it and there was a sign saying “Experienced Climbers Only” so we were like “That’s Us!” and off we went. It was a pretty intense climb and well worth the hard work for that amazing view. We walked the base of it also, before heading on our way. We came upon Piron Falls, which are the biggest falls I had seen in NZ yet and were very nice. We followed a few other signs down dirt roads that led to some small disappointments and dead ends. Rob read of a black sand beach so we went to find it and came upon “mosquito bay”, which didn’t have any mosquitos, but did have very black sand and some wicked sand cliffs with very unique layers. We hung out here for quite a while and then went to find a last place  to sleep in the car for the night. We drove down the only other dirt road we could and found a sign that said to the right for Waionui Lagoon and left for RNZAF AIr Weapons Range!!! Well, we turned right and we lucked out again and had a great grassy spot over looking a huge bay with sand dunes and the sun setting. Nice!
