Northland RT Day#3 - Kouto Bouldes and Waipoua Forest

We headed south and we knew there was a ferry this time to cross the river and we decided to take it as it was a very long way around. We seen a tiny sign for the “Kouto Boulders” after the ferry and every other tourist just kept on driving buy so we did a u-turn to check it out. We were glad we because they were the roundest boulders you ever did see, just sitting there on the beach! Very strange! The stop of the day was to be the Waipoua forest with giant Kauri trees. We went for a few forest walks in different spots and seen some of these monsters with trunk girths of13.8m and 16m, just massive! They figure they may be around 2000 years old! WOW. After we were done in the forest the weather wasn’t the greatest and really low overcast so we were up in the clouds driving through the big hills and couldn’t hardly see 10 feet in front of the car! Both of us were pretty sore from hiking and sleeping in that very uncomfortable car and decided to find some beds for the night. We stopped in Dargaville, “the sweet potato capital of NZ”. So obviously we bought some sweet potatoes and some fresh lamb to BBQ right! We found a caravan park with little villas right near the beach and the nice lady gave it to us for $50.
